RIVERenaissance: A Flood Anniversary
Less than two months
after the floods of June
2008, the staff of the
Cedar Rapids Downtown District
determined a need for the community to
collectively commemorate the one year
milestone. Without hesitation, we
volunteered to serve as the central hub
and master calendar resource for
downtown and beyond. Today, we’re proud
to introduce RIVERenaissance: A Flood
Anniversary.
RIVERenaissance is a chance for the Cedar Rapids community to acknowledge our experiences of the flood on a local, regional and national level - from the significant financial need that still remains while we recover and rebuild, to the tremendous progress we’ve made, thanks to hard work, collaboration, and our Midwestern resilience.
This brochure showcases the headline and affiliated RIVERenaissance events made possible by the staff, volunteers, sponsors and community supporters. We hope you’ll join us in making new memories as we support each other through this inspiring journey of pride, hope, and strength.

With so many incredible stories to tell and heroes to be recognized, we were grateful when MVP Visual Media Studios began filming our community’s incredible journey through the Flood of 2008. This moving documentary is a reminder of the resilience and determination that embodies every Cedar Rapids citizen.
Following the documentary, there will be a brief ceremony where a 50-year time capsule of memories and messages will be dedicated and sealed for the community.
This memorial event will be held in the US Cellular Center, where patrons will be surrounded by a variety of newspaper pages that show the flood damage, and swift reactions of members and leaders within this community. (Courtesy of The Gazette and Rapids Reproductions.)

After the flood, returning downtown
businesses were invited to enjoy free Friday
picnics in Greene Square Park, called Rebuild
Reunion Luncheons. In spirit of those
successful events, we invite all who work,
volunteer or support
downtown to Sweet
Reunion, in Greene
Square Park.
Buy a brownbag
lunch special from a
downtown eating
establishment, and bring it to Greene Square
Park for a picnic and FREE dessert, on
Friday, June 12, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at our Sweet Reunion!
The band McPhisto will serenade you while you reunite with fellow downtown supporters and friends with your tasty treat from local caterers.
For a list of participating restaurants and more information about the afternoon, visit www.downtowncr.org.

Floodstock is a day into evening event, recognizing flood impacted areas of our community through activity and musical performance from local and regional acts. Join us as we celebrate progress while emphasizing the continued financial need in order to rebuild our community, better than ever. Guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Food and beverage vendors on site, so no coolers please.

The Cedar Rapids Downtown District is one of the focal points of flood recovery, rebuilding, and realization that the core of our community will never be the same- intertwining the sense of loss with opportunity for what can be. We know we’re not alone in the desire to acknowledge the one year mark, and with that, the Downtown District has agreed to serve as the central hub we are proud to call RIVERenaissance: A Flood Anniversary. The one year anniversary is an opportunity to communicate on a local, regional, and national level our accomplishments in conjunction to what remains a serious financial need.
RIVERenaissance is a series of flood anniversary events that will be held from June 11-14, 2009. The Cedar Rapids Downtown District will host three headline events, and in turn, provide businesses and organizations throughout the community the opportunity to register their own affiliated event. There is no fee to register your event - we simply want to create an inclusive schedule of those anniversary events happening downtown and beyond.
