Environmental Assessments of Flood-Damaged Properties Underway

1/22/2010 6:58:19 AM

The City of Cedar Rapids continues to work through the process of demolishing approximately 1,200 flood-damaged properties. Currently, the City’s contractor, Tetra Tech, Inc. is conducting environmental inspections and assessments of flood-damaged structures on the northwest side of Cedar Rapids. The inspectors are only entering properties in which the City has received a signed “Consent to Enter and if necessary, Demolish” form.

The environmental assessments will determine the amount, if any, of asbestos, mercury and other household hazardous waste that may exist in each structure. When each inspection is complete, the Tetra Tech inspectors use orange paint to stencil a “TT” on a front window of the structure.

The City will use the results of these assessments to determine which properties need additional abatement or clean up and removal. A similar inspection and painting procedure will be used when contractors are hired to abate the hazardous waste found during these assessments.

Demolitions are expected to begin again in the spring. For more information, please contact the City’s Code Enforcement Division at (319) 286-5831.
