Environmental Abatements of Flood-Damaged Properties to Begin

2/1/2010 11:06:58 AM

The City of Cedar Rapids continues to work through the steps to demolish approximately 1,200 flood-damaged properties later this year. Beginning this week, the City’s contractor, Lindstrom Environmental, Inc., will conduct environmental abatements of flood-damaged structures. Contractors are only entering properties in which the City has received permission through a signed “Consent to Enter and if necessary, Demolish” form.

The environmental abatement contractors will remove any asbestos, mercury and other household hazardous waste from contaminated structures. When each abatement is complete, the Lindstrom Environmental staff will use green paint to stencil an “LE” on a front window of the structure. This mark will appear near the “TT” applied by Tetra-Tech, Inc. as environmental assessments are completed.

As these abatements are completed, Tetra-Tech, Inc. will examine each property to confirm the removal of all environmental hazards. The next step in this process will be the demolition of the primary structures on each property. For more information, please contact the City’s Code Enforcement Division at (319) 286-5831.
